Student in Focus: Valentina Bernard

Updated: Aug 5, 2021

"Hello
My name is Valentina Bernard. I am fifteen years old. I am living in Portail Ca Ira, Leogane Haiti. I was born on September 9th, 2001 in a small community called Buneau Lapointe in Leogane. My mother's name is Louisita Garcon and she lives in Dufort, Leogane. My father is Yves Marcelin Bernard and he lives on Rue Lavandiere, Leogane. My parents are not married. They only had me together. My father has one child, just me and my mother has three children: two girls and one boy, I am her second child. So, I have one sister and one brother.
I am living with four people in the house: my grandmother, my aunt and my cousins. I go to Saint-Rose Catholic church with my grandmother every Sunday. My grandmother has three children and she still looks young.
My favorite sport is jump rope. I do everything at home: cooking, laundry, make beds, water collection, etc...
My kindergarten school was Joyeux Soleil Kindergarten. Saint-Rose de Lima and Ecole Nationale des filles had been my two Primary schools. I am in 8th Grade in La Redemption. It is twenty minutes walking form my house to school. I leave home at 6:40 AM every morning, because school starts at 7 and finishes at 3:00 PM and I come back home at 3 PM.
I have got future dreams after school, I would like to become a Police Officer and a Nurse.
I am asthmatic. Warm weather is okay for me. When it is hot or cold, I am terrible, very very sick, I have shortness of breath. It is hard for me, and I do not even have good treatment, no inhaler. And I do not know if asthma can be treated. I need your prayers.
I would like to thank Haiti scholarships for taking care of me. I do not forget what you did for the children after the hurricane Matthew, you visited us to make sure that we were safe, you helped us with food and repaired our homes. You had checked on me all the time. I do not forget anything. You are good people. And I also want to thank the Donors for big support. I love you so much. I do not know what my family would do without your great contribution in our education.
May my Lord bless and protect you all!"
Valentina Bernard

There is so much more to each of our student's lives, and we are so thankful you get to learn a little more about each of them and their struggles and dreams. Thank you for being a beacon of light.
